About

Matzo Outside the Box is dedicated to all things matzo, with recipes for year-round use, Passover recipes and a blog written from the perspective of Bernie Mendelbaum, a character created by Natalie Seltzer. Bernie is an 80 year-old Jewish grandfather obsessed with matzo, and he quickly learned that a blog is a perfect outlet for kvetches of any kind.

From Bernie

Hello out there and welcome to Matzo Outside the Box. My name is Bernie Mendelbaum. I am 80 years old and I am in love with matzo! My wife Gertie says I’m a tad obsessed.  Matzo and I have been having a year round love affair for many moons. I began my matzo journey years ago, but this blog is how I am going to share my matzo exploration with all of you.  It’s going to be filled with matzo recipes, matzo facts, tidbits and of course the goings on and opinions that pop into my mind. Matzo Outside the Box has a mission to take matzo to a new level! It is about what matzo can be…exciting and infinite.  It answers that age-old question, “What are we going to do with all of this left-over matzo?”

About Natalie

Natalie Seltzer first started cooking with matzo when she found out she had an allergy to yeast and quickly discovered it was a great ingredient in countless recipes. She has a master’s degree in Food Studies from New York University.  Natalie lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband Eric Miller, who runs his own design business and developed this website.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Since matzo was traditionally made by hand and was round, the idea of changing how the matzo was made and shaped caused some individuals to believe that the square machine made matzo was not in any way traditional and therefore less kosher.
